Encare Awarded Swecare Export Award 2026, Strengthening Global Position in Value-Based Surgery

Encare has been awarded the Swecare Export Award 2026, recognising Swedish life science companies that combine innovation, international reach, and sustainable export growth. The jury highlighted Encare’s ability to build a scalable business model with strong export performance, supported by international partnerships and leading reference customers, particularly in the United States. The award was presented by Sweden’s Minister for Social Affairs, Jakob Forssmed, at a ceremony in Stockholm on 21 April 2026.

Encare is the sole commercial partner of the global ERAS® Society and provides the ERAS® Interactive Audit System (EIAS) and ERAS® Implementation Program (EIP) to more than 137 hospitals across 30+ countries. These solutions support hospitals in measuring and improving adherence to evidence-based perioperative care pathways — contributing to fewer complications, shorter length of stay, and meaningful cost reductions per patient documented in peer-reviewed studies.

“This is an important recognition for the entire team and for Swedish life science,” says Rasmus Waller, CEO of Encare. “We have built Encare over many years in close collaboration with the ERAS® Society, and this award shows that the work is now making an impact where it matters most — with hospitals and health systems dealing with capacity constraints, waiting lists and rising costs.”

The award reflects a broader global trend. Healthcare systems are increasingly moving towards value-based care, where improving patient outcomes while optimizing resource use is becoming central. Structured, measurable perioperative care plays a key role in this transition — and it is precisely where Encare is positioned.

The Swecare Export Awards have been presented since 2008 to Swedish companies demonstrating strong international growth and impact within healthcare.

Mayo Clinic Expands Use of ERAS® Interactive Audit System (EIAS)

After an extended period of collaboration, Encare is happy to share that the ERAS® Interactive Audit System (EIAS) is being expanded at Mayo Clinic.

ERAS® implementation requires more than guidelines. It requires sustained operational discipline.

While the evidence supporting structured perioperative pathways is well established, translating evidence into consistently delivered clinical practice over time remains a significant challenge. The difference lies not in introduction, but in execution. Not in knowledge, but in governance.

Through collaboration within Mayo Clinic Platform_Solutions Studio, the focus has been on enabling sustained perioperative performance through structured measurement, benchmarking, and transparent evaluation of clinical workflows.

EIAS supports healthcare teams by enabling systematic capture and analysis of perioperative process and outcome data. This strengthens protocol adherence, clinical governance, and pathway performance across surgical service lines.

Improvement does not come from adoption alone. It comes from the ability to sustain performance.

We are grateful for the collaboration and proud of the teams involved.

Leading European Centers Achieve ERAS® Qualification in Cardiac Surgery, Supported by Encare

During late 2025, leading European cardiac surgery centers completed full ERAS® implementation and achieved ERAS® Qualification in cardiac surgery, supported by Encare. This milestone represents a significant advancement in structured, evidence-based perioperative care within one of the most complex surgical specialties.

Cardiac surgery is characterized by high clinical complexity, substantial resource requirements, and significant variation in care pathways. Length of hospital stay, need for intensive care, and the risk of postoperative complications have a major impact on both patient outcomes and healthcare resource utilization. For this reason, standardized, measurable, and continuously monitored care pathways are particularly critical within the specialty.

Among the first European hospitals to achieve ERAS® Qualification for cardiac surgery are Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Germany and Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Careggi in Florence, Italy.

ERAS® Qualification is independently assessed and issued by the ERAS® Society, based on sustained compliance with published guidelines, multidisciplinary implementation, and continuous outcome monitoring over time. The cardiac surgery ERAS® protocol is developed and maintained by the Society based on international evidence and expert consensus.

Experience from UKE and Careggi shows that a structured introduction of ERAS® in cardiac surgery can lead to clear improvements in care pathways, including shorter lengths of stay, reduced need for intensive care, and fewer serious postoperative complications. Together, these improvements contribute to more predictable, efficient, and patient-centered care.

Encare supported both hospitals through the ERAS® Implementation Program (EIP), providing a structured framework for introducing ERAS® into clinical practice across the organization. Long-term performance monitoring is enabled through Encare’s ERAS® Interactive Audit System (EIAS), allowing care teams to continuously track compliance, outcomes, and improvement trends.

Beyond Germany and Italy, additional European hospitals have initiated ERAS® cardiac surgery programs. Internationally, established ERAS® centers in countries such as Chile and Uruguay are also expanding ERAS® into cardiac surgery, supported by Encare.

The expansion of ERAS® into cardiac surgery demonstrates the scalability of the ERAS® methodology across surgical specialties and healthcare systems, reinforcing its role as a foundation for modern perioperative quality improvement.

Why Many ERAS® Implementations Fail – And How Hospitals Can Get It Right

Many hospitals begin their ERAS® journey with strong motivation and clinical engagement, yet struggle to achieve sustained improvement over time. A common misconception is that ERAS® implementation is primarily about adopting a protocol.

ERAS® implementations often fail when hospitals focus on protocols instead of structured implementation, measurement, and team-based change management.

In reality, ERAS® implementations often fail when there is a lack of lack structure, continuous measurement, and multidisciplinary ownership.

ERAS® success requires more than a protocol

Successful ERAS® implementation depends on choosing an implementation approach that matches a hospital’s current level of maturity, resources, and readiness for change. Without this alignment, teams risk fragmented adoption, variable compliance, and limited long-term impact.

A structured approach to getting ERAS® right

The ERAS® Implementation Pathways provide a clear, evidence-based roadmap for introducing ERAS® into clinical practice in a sustainable way. Developed in collaboration with the ERAS® Society and implemented globally by Encare, these pathways help hospitals move from intention to measurable results.

Hospitals can begin ERAS® implementation through several pathways, including:

  • ERAS® Flash Audit, to assess current compliance and identify improvement potential
  • ERAS® Implementation Program Assess, enabling self-led implementation with structured evaluation
  • Fully guided ERAS® Implementation Program (EIP), with expert coaching and defined milestones

EIP Pathways

Core components that prevent implementation failure

All ERAS® Implementation Pathways are built on three essential elements:

  • ERAS® Protocols based on international, evidence-based guidelines
  • ERAS® Interactive Audit System (EIAS) for continuous measurement, benchmarking, and feedback
  • A proven change-management methodology that enables multidisciplinary teams to translate data into sustained improvement

From implementation to sustained performance

Regardless of the entry point, these pathways are designed to help teams:

  • Improve and maintain high compliance with ERAS® guidelines
  • Reduce complications and variation in care
  • Embed continuous improvement into everyday clinical practice

When ERAS® is implemented through a structured pathway, it becomes part of routine care rather than a time-limited initiative.
