Despite the tough situation with COVID-19, the Urology Surgical team lead by Dr Guillaume Guichard at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Besançon, France completed their ERAS® implementation which started in 2019 and became ERAS® Qualified in the Urology/Cystectomy ERAS® Protocol in July, 2021. They were trained by the ERAS® Coach Valérie Addor at the ERAS® Center of Excellence Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV), Switzerland. On June 16, 2021, the Gynecology Team of CHUM, represented by Dr Vanessa Samouëlian, Chantal Zaryczny, Elise Hillman and Laetitia Jourdan, presented their ERAS® work carried out since 2015. Based on their work, progress shown and results, they were approved for ERAS® Qualification by the ERAS® Society. In Copenhagen, a team lead by Dr Jens Hillingsoe at the Rigshospitalet started their ERAS® Implementation in March 2020 and despite the COVID-19 situation, were able to complete it after 12 months with very good results! The Colorectal Team of University of Clinica Universitaria Colombia (CUC) in Bogotá, Colombia recently completed their ERAS® Implementation Program! Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the team has been able to demonstrate great improvements in the perioperative care and acquired the necessary skills in ERAS® Enhanced Recovery After Surgery. The team has been trained and supported by the ERAS® Clinical Experts of Clinica Reina Sofia, Bogotá; Dr Arnold Barrios, Dr Eduardo Zarate, Lic. Vivian Pineda, and the ERAS® Coach Dr Angela Navas. ERAS® – A Success from the Nurse’s Perspective
A newly published article based on a survey among ERAS® Nurses, brings up factors such as improving patient outcomes and satisfaction being rated as main motivators for an ERAS® implementation. Further, in order to sustain a successful ERAS® Implementation, factors such as continuous staff education and coordination beyond the implementation period, appear to be of utmost importance.
Suggestions for a sustainable ERAS® program were 1) resources for continuous training, 2) regular feedback on ERAS® compliance for team motivation and 3) discuss state-of-the-art publications for evidence-based care.
